Mother I
Ananya Chakraborti
Someday I too will have a man
Who will put flowers in my hair
I will cook for him
And bear his children
Share his agonies
Spend sleepless nights with him
When all is not well in our world
He will be the light in my eyes
As I will wait for him to come home at dusk
We too will speak the language of love
Like you say you did with father
There will however be one difference
Between your world that was
And my world that will be
Every evening as I light the lamp
And clean my courtyard for me
I will know
I am doing this
By choice
Mother II
Your heart shrinks with fear
That I may break and fall to pieces
Every time I ask questions
Why do you look so longingly
At the beaten track
Mother
The day you delivered me
You gave me my first lesson in progress
To move out of square one
